It is extremely unlikely that the catheter was sheared off. Its designed to be inserted and readjusted. The reason why it was shorter was probably because the nurse picked a smaller IVC to try. The smaller the catherter the smaller the vein they can put it into, and by the sounds of it, you have terrible veins, so they were hoping to be able to insert it in any vein they could. I am not sure what country you are in, but in the UK and Australia, the smallest catheter is a blue one, second smallest is a pink, third smallest is a green, then gray, orange and whites. So maybe the last one was a blue? I ve only ever witnessed one catheter breaking off, and it had been in the lady’s arm for about 1 week (much longer than recommended) , and the whole tube that was inside the vein did not come out. It was very obvious at the time and we had to make a small incision and fish it out. I really do not think the plastic inside the vein would have broken in half. Its very tough. However if you are worried, go back to the doctor. They may do an x ray of your arm to soothe your anxiety, but they would not X ray your whole body looking for it.

Yes, it was a coincidence. You got lucky. It happens to everyone once in a while. I’m sure if you thought back, you can think of plenty of times you screwed up and had to start over on whatever project it was.
